Born May 22, 1864, Brunkeberg, Kviteseid, Telemark, Norway, to Halvor Olavson (1835-1873, son of 0lav 0lavson -1797-1876 - and Liv Torvildsdatter Staulen 1799-1868 - Ljosdall) and Aslaug Tarjeisdatter (1837-1888, daughter of Tarjei Ealvorson -1804-1877- and Ingebjørg Kjetilsdatter Lidsland -1815-1842) Lid.
Immigrated in 1883. Married Hilda Dorothea Josephine Ehrhardt, Oct. 28, 1890, Wittenberg, Wis. Died Feb. 21, 1915, Northfield, Minn.
When he was age 12 his father died and with his mother he moved to a hamlet northeast of Brunkeberg, which was called Haugan. He spent many years herding sheep. He immigrated to Milwaukee, and later to Wittenberg, Wis., where he taught at the Homme Orphans' Home and the Bethany Indian Mission, under the direction of Rev. Tobias Larson (foster parents of Hilda Ehrhardt who became his wife).

In 1881 he went to Northfield to attend Northfield Seminary, and was ordained in 1890. He served parishes at Beldenville, Wis.; Menomonie, Wis.; back to Beldenville; Cottonwood, Minn.;
Northfield, Minn. In 1913 he visited Norway as a speaker for the St. 0laf Choir, then on tour. Honored by Dr.and Mrs. R.E. Haugan Children: Mrs. Stella Young (1891-1964)~ Ragnvald (1893-1894); Mrs. Ragna (L.L. Kelly) Kelly (1896-1928); Miss Esther Haugan (1898-1930); Dr. Randolph E. Haugan (b. July 31, 1902) manager of Augsburg Publishing House, Minneapolis, Minn. (m. Kathryn Knudson, 1925) Children of Dr. R.E.Haugan: James (b. Feb. 16, 1929) m. Jo Ann Egge (who have children: Jonathan; Lucinda; Jeffrey; Gilbert); Mary Kathryn (Mrs. Keith Ingebritsen; b. Sept. 12, 1931, who have children: Mark; Kathryn; Paul; Randolph)
