altDr. CARLO ALBERTO SPERATI,

Born Dec. 29, 1860, Oslo, Norway to Paolo and Marie Sperati. Spent several years in the Norwegian merchant marine before immigrating to America. Attended Luther Coll. and the Seminary at Robbinsdale, Minn., 1883~91, with the encouragement and assistance of Deaconess Sister Elizabeth Fedde.
Built churches and established congregations in Bellingham and Tacoma, Wash.
Married Emma Hoffoss. They were among the founders of Pacific Luth. Coll. In 1905 he came to Luther Coll., where he directed the musical activities for 40 years. St. Olaf Coll. Conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Music on him in 1933. In 1953, while on a tour of Norway with the Luther Coll. Concert Band, he' received from King Haakon the decoration of the Order of St. Olaf
for his labors to develop and foster music among Norwegian-American Lutherans. Died in 1944. His Italian born father was of a musical heritage, well known as a conductor of the Symphonic Orchestra,
organist at St. Olaf's Church, director at the Royal Opera, and director of the Military Band.
