Born Apr. 28, 1874, Vaksvik, Aa1esund, Norway, to Peter Elias, (1837-1916) and Anna Bergitte (Sather 1837-1918) Nygaard. Paternal grandparents: Elling Tarbu, Karin Furstrand. Maternal grandparents: Claus Dahlus, Anna Dahlus.

Brothers - Kristian Peter, in Noway, (1872-1959); Martin, Potlach, Idaho (1881-? ). Sister: Lovise, in Norway (1879-1962).
Immigrated in 1892. Married Anna Karin Grimson, July 13, 1899, Hatton, N.D.
Died Jan 26, 1965, and buried at Finley, N.D.
In Norway, his father was a fisherman, so he was gone much of the time.
Carl Johan helped his mother on the home place. He also was out fishing, and worked for others in the neighborhood.
He came to Grand Forks, N.D. where he worked on farms. He later came to Hatton, N.D. and was married there, in the Washington prairie church. They purchased a farm near Finley, where he resided till his death. He was active and an ardent member of the Ostervo1d Lutheran church; served as secretary of the church for more than 30 years; served as school director; on Township boards for years, etc.

Chi1dren:A1vin Peter (1900-?) farmer; Minerva Christine (1901- ?);  Hja1mar Curtis (1906-?) owned a hardware business, member of N.D. legislature for many terms, U.S. Congressman for two terms, where he died of a heart attack July 18,1963; Lenore Kathryn (Nygaard) Kline (1908-1960) teacher; Harold Christopher (1911-?) farmer; Bernice Jeanette (Nygaard) Hillestad (1913-?);  Kermit Adolph (1915-?) farmer; Earl Joseph (1919-) teacher. Honored by children and grandchildren.
